Quest for the Red-breasted Goose
Bulgaria is often overlooked compared to its European neighbors and doesn’t usually come to mind when thinking about ecotourism. However, in the winter, eastern Bulgaria near the Black Sea is home to an incredible avian spectacle as most of the world’s population of Red-breasted Geese migrate to this area. Thousands of overwintering Red-breasted Geese is the central theme of this trip, however, we will also be looking for a fantastic array of other birds and some special nocturnal mammals as well.
The lakes near the Black Sea and the seacoast itself draw wintering birds from all over Europe and Asia. Greater White-fronted and perhaps a few rare Lesser White-fronted Geese will be mixed in with the Red-breasted and other waterfowl could include White-headed Duck, Ferruginous Duck and Smew. In addition to the waterfowl, a host of loons, grebes, raptors and waterbirds can be found including Great Bittern, Pygmy Cormorant, White-tailed Eagles and both Rough-legged and Long-legged Buzzards (Hawks). If weather permits we will travel up to Srebarna Biosphere Reserve by the Danube in Romania for close views of Dalmatian Pelican and other species. We will also spend some nights spotlighting for mammals including Raccoon Dog, Golden Jackal and both Marbled and Steppe Polecats all of which are fairly common.

Day 1 – Friday, January 31: Home City to US Gateway to European Gateway and on to Varna, Bulgaria
Day 2 – Saturday, February 1: Arrival in Europe, Fly to Varna, Bulgaria to Durankulak
Days 3 – 5 – Sunday - Tuesday, February 2 - 4: Durankulak and Shabla Lakes
Days 6 & 7 – Wednesday & Thursday, February 5 & 6: Durankulak to Kamchia & Burgas
Day 8 – Friday, February 7: Burgas to Varna and the Airport
Day 9 – Saturday, February 8: Arrival in the US and Home
